Mesa Verde National Park: We Missed the Tour… But Still Had an Amazing Visit

After an unforgettable morning sand sledding at Great Sand Dunes National Park, we hit the road for Mesa Verde National Park.

We knew we were going to be tight on time  

Our goal? Make it to the Visitor & Research Center before it closed.

Mission accomplished!

Well… mostly.

We Made It… Just a Little Too Late

We pulled into the visitor center just before closing, excited to make it with a few hours to explore. 

Unfortunately, we did miss the last ranger led tour by about 30 minutes.

Was I disappointed?

A little.

But that’s part of road-tripping. You can’t control traffic, construction, or how long you’ll spend somewhere amazing (looking at you, Great Sand Dunes!).

Instead of letting it ruin our visit, we made the most of the time we had.

The Visitor Center Movie

Since we couldn’t tour the cliff dwellings, we started by watching the park’s introductory movie.

I’ll be honest…

It was packed with interesting history about the Ancestral Pueblo people and how they built these incredible homes into the cliffs.

It was also one of those movies where, after a long day in the car and climbing sand dunes… I may have caught myself fighting to keep my eyes open a time or two. 😂

Still, it gave us a much better appreciation for what we were about to see.

Cliff Palace vs. Balcony House

If you’re planning a visit, here’s something I wish I’d understood before we arrived.

Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America. It has around 150 rooms and more than 20 kivas (ceremonial rooms), making it one of the park’s most impressive archaeological sites. It’s the iconic view you’ll often see in photos of Mesa Verde.

Balcony House, on the other hand, is much smaller but much more adventurous. Visiting it involves climbing a tall ladder, crawling through a narrow tunnel, and navigating steep stone steps. It’s a more interactive experience and a great choice if you’re looking for a little adventure.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to save both guided tours for another trip!

The Best Views

After leaving the visitor center, we made our way through the park, stopping at several overlooks.

One of our favorites was the Park Point Fire Lookout.

The panoramic views were incredible, and it was amazing to see just how vast the landscape is from the highest point in the park.

We also stopped at several viewpoints overlooking the cliff dwellings, and even without the guided tour, it was fascinating to imagine what life looked like here hundreds of years ago.

Mesa Verde is unlike any other National Park we’ve visited. It’s less about dramatic scenery and more about stepping back in time and appreciating the incredible history preserved within the cliffs.

One Thing I Recommend to Everyone

If you’re planning to visit any National Park, I can’t recommend the GuideAlong app enough.

Seriously… download it, buy your park tours, and the night before make sure you download the tour so you don’t have to have cell service  

It acts like a personal tour guide in your car, pointing out overlooks, sharing history, telling stories, and explaining things you would otherwise drive right past.

We used it throughout our Southwest road trip, and it made every park so much more meaningful.

It was one of the best purchases we made for the trip.

Ending the Day in Cortez

That evening, we stayed in an Airbnb in Cortez, Colorado.

After several nights in hotels, having an entire house felt like such a treat.

We were able to spread out, do a few loads of laundry, and enjoy a slower evening before another busy day of exploring.

Sometimes it’s the little things—like clean clothes and a little extra space—that make a huge difference on a two-week road trip.

Final Thoughts

Did we miss out on the cliff dwelling tour?

Yes.

Was it worth staying an additional day and shifting our timetable for the next stop?

Probably not.

But even without the tour, Mesa Verde was a cool, unique National Park.

It reminded us that history can be just as breathtaking as mountains and canyons, and that sometimes Plan B still makes for a pretty incredible day.

A Few Tips Before You Go

✔️ Reserve your cliff dwelling tour tickets as early as possible, especially during the busy summer season.
✔️ Don’t skip Park Point Fire Lookout—the views are incredible.

✔️ If you’re road-tripping, consider staying in Cortez. It’s a great base for exploring the park and a nice place to recharge.
