We Drove Across the Country… On Purpose.
For almost a year, this trip lived in my head.
Every time I’d scroll social media, I’d save another “must-see” stop. Every blog I read added another hike, another scenic overlook, another quirky roadside attraction. Before long, I had planned enough adventures to fill a month… and only two weeks to do them.
Somewhere along the way, I realized this trip wasn’t going to be about checking every box.
It was going to be about making memories with my family.
That meant letting go of the pressure to see everything and instead focusing on the places we were most excited about. The iconic stops. The breathtaking views. The experiences we’d still be talking about years from now. And, maybe just as importantly, leaving enough room to slow down, laugh together, and not spend every vacation day rushing to the next destination.
So this summer, we packed up the car in South Carolina and headed west.
Over the next two weeks, we crossed deserts, explored national parks, drove stretches of historic Route 66, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, survived Las Vegas in July (which is basically like vacationing inside an air fryer), and discovered that no matter how carefully you plan, the best memories are often the ones you never planned at all.
This blog is my way of remembering the adventure—and hopefully helping someone else plan theirs. I’ll be sharing our itinerary, what was worth the stop (and what wasn’t), practical tips, funny mishaps, favorite foods, and all the little moments that made this one of our favorite family vacations.
If you’re dreaming of a Southwest road trip—or just wondering if driving across the country with your family is a good idea—I hope you’ll follow along.
❤️ Kayla
